Provenance
This magnificent vase is in the likeness of a cast iron urn originally made by the Coalbrookdale Foundry circa 1875. The detail to the urn depicts the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. Other characters portrayed are Satan and his fallen angels, and in the foreground the angel Michael sent by God to deliver his judgement and lead Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.
To the socle is an entwined serpent which personifies Satan, who entered into the body of a sleeping serpent and returned to tempt Eve to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge.
The inspiration for the vase came from the poem ‘Paradise Lost’ by the 17th Century poet John Milton. This was produced in two editions. The first published in 1667 and the latter in 1674, at which time it was re-divided into 12 books.
He took the Genesis account and greatly expanded it using his creative flair.
Milton used his imagination to create “behind the scenes” conversations with God, Satan and various angels. His additions to the Genesis account have become imbedded in our culture and have caused many people to mistakenly think Milton’s account is found in the Bible.
