Provenance
The style of the temple is typical of the “folly style”, popular in the early 19th century, with its clean, crisp, elegant lines, the main structure and classical fluted pillars are of hand antiqued stone composition, whilst the pediment is aged stone resin surmounted by a hand distressed faux lead dome.
The bather of Allegrain, after the original, sculpted by Christoph Gabriel Allegrain in 1767 for Madame Du Barry (mistress of Louis XV) and placed in the gardens of the chateau at Louvecienne. Although the goddess og love, Venus, influenced Allegrain’s statue, her small head, delicate features and slender waist are characteristics of the 18th century French ideal.
